Prince George to Glenannan Transmission Project
We're proposing to develop new 500 kilovolt (kV) infrastructure from Williston Substation near Prince George to Glenannan Substation near Fraser Lake to meet increasing demand for clean electricity in northwest B.C. Learn more about our proposed Prince George to Glenannan Transmission (PGGT) project below.
What's new
May 2024
We're working to identify the leading route for the proposed PGGT project. We’ve completed our second round of community open houses and are considering feedback received as we advance our route selection process. We're working to identify a leading route for PGGT by summer 2024.
In March 2024, we started geotechnical work to confirm conditions along parts of the potential route.
We anticipate starting environmental field studies in spring/summer 2024.
Demand is growing from customers in the North Coast area for clean, reliable power to support electrifying their operations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The current 500 kV transmission infrastructure from Williston Substation near Prince George to Skeena Substation near Terrace is reaching capacity and electricity from the Prince George to Terrace Capacitors project, which is currently under construction, is already fully subscribed. We're proposing to expand our transmission system to meet projected demand.
We're proposing to add a new transmission line and associated infrastructure from Williston Substation near Prince George to Glenannan Substation near Fraser Lake:
- New, approximately 170 km, 500 kV transmission line.
- Expand Williston Substation to the east.
- Expand or upgrade of Glenannan Substation.
- Expand Saranovich Capacitor Station.
- Add fibre optic cables on new or existing transmission structures.
This project is part of the North Coast electrification initiative which also includes the Glenannan to Terrace Transmission (GTTT) project, Prince George to Terrace Capacitors project, the Northwest Substation Outage Mitigation project, proposed thermal upgrades to the existing 500 kV lines from Williston Substation to Skeena Substation, potential new transmission infrastructure north, south and west of Terrace and customer interconnection projects.
We've identified a proposed route corridor shown in the figure below as well as options along two parts of the route as shown in the figures that follow:

Routing Options – Williston to Node 5
The route options and current alignments being considered are shown as dotted lines in the figures following the overview map below. A figure showing in more detail how the new transmission lines would exist Williston Substation is provided after the route option figures.

Proposed Routes Exiting Williston Substation

If a route option going west is selected, the existing 60 kV line is proposed to be energized to 500 kV and a new 60 kV line is proposed to be built north of the existing line. The routing leaving Williston Substation is yet to be determined.
If a route option going south is selected, the new line is proposed to be located east of the existing lines to Node 1A and will then cross the existing lines to Node 1B from where it is proposed to travel between existing lines on the west side of the right-of-way.
Routing Options – Node 8 to Node 9
The options being considered are shown as dotted lines in the figures following the overview map below.

In May 2023 and March 2024, we hosted in-person open houses in Prince George, Vanderhoof, and Fraser Lake to introduce the PGGT project route corridor and the route options at its east and west ends. We also hosted two virtual open houses in each of 2023 and 2024.
We had a good turnout at the open houses and received feedback on the route and options which we're now considering in our assessments. See reports and documents below to view the information presented at the open houses.
Early engagement with our Indigenous partners is also underway, and this aligns with our commitment to co-design the environment review and explore Indigenous co-ownership of the proposed new transmission lines, as well as other means of Indigenous participation.
Feel free to contact us at any time to discuss or provide feedback about the proposed PGGT project, including the route options under consideration.
We look forward to discussing our plans with you.
