New video helps first-time users of lighting calculator

Out with the old, in with the new energy saving lighting calculator

With updates to our lighting calculator, we've produced a new tutorial video that will bring first-time users up to speed on how to use this important tool. It will also act as a great refresher for more experienced users, and now includes changes related to recent changes in federal energy-efficiency guidelines.

When working with customers eligible for Leaders in Energy Management or the Self-Serve Incentive Program, use of the energy saving lighting calculator is a required part of the application. BC Hydro engineers use the detailed lighting calculations to qualify the energy savings and to calculate an incentive. And some customers will use the calculator to get internal approvals for their lighting projects.

The calculator isn't required, however, for customers eligible for the Business Energy Saving Incentive program. That program builds relevant calculations into the program application.

Calculator has been updated in concert with new standards

Earlier this year, we discussed Natural Resources Canada's Amendment 13 and its impact on our programs. The latest version of the lighting calculator reflects the new fluorescent baselines and the "potentially incentible" energy savings from fluorescent to fluorescent retrofits. As a reminder, incandescent bulbs to screw-in LED lamps, and exit signs, are no longer eligible for incentives.

"Take the time to familiarize yourself with the new changes – they are listed in the user guide tab of the calculator," says BC Hydro senior engineer Alvin Wai. "If you work with LEDs, you'll want to pay special attention to those configuration changes."

We've developed a short video walk-through to help you navigate the new lighting calculator. Use the step-by-by instructions to understand and get the most out of the tool.
