Free battery storage for homes in select areas
A pilot offer that provides backup power to your home
We're offering residents in specific geographical areas a complimentary battery energy storage system. This pilot offer is limited to invited customers located in areas of high growth and increasing demand for electricity.
Apply below to take advantage of this opportunity to receive a certified, professionally installed battery system that increases your energy flexibility and provides backup power in the case of a power outage.
The offer
Accepted applicants will receive one battery storage system from Eguana Technologies, professionally installed. It's a certified system that will be configured to support your home during power outages.
We'll enroll the battery in our Peak Saver program, which allows us to manage your battery during times of high electricity demand.
We cover the cost of the battery and its installation. You're responsible for its ongoing maintenance, and removal and reinstallation should you need to remove it.
What is a battery energy storage system?
It's a battery for your home that stores excess, renewable electricity, charged from BC Hydro’s grid. It increases your resilience to power outages, capable of powering your home’s major equipment such as lighting, fridge and localized electric space heating and more for about 48 hours.
Eligibility
Only residents who have been invited to this pilot offer by BC Hydro are eligible to participate. We'll have reached out to you by email.
In addition, the residence where the battery will be installed must:
- Be your primary residence for most of the year. If you rent your home, you must obtain your landlord’s consent*.
- Be a single-family home, duplex, or townhouse with a suitable location for battery installation, such as an attached garage or other indoor, non-living space.
- Not currently have a battery energy storage system.
- Have an existing internet connection, accessible via both Wi-Fi and Ethernet.
- Have a communicating smart meter.
* Landlord consent form will be emailed to you following the submission of your application.
How it works
Once you've confirmed that you meet the eligibility criteria and have reviewed the terms and conditions, complete the application that’s at the bottom of this page by November 14, 2024.
We'll review your application and, if accepted, you'll then receive a welcome package from our trusted program partner, City Green. They're helping us deliver this program with installations, self-generation application support (see step 3), and other administration.
Our program partner, City Green, will confirm a date and time for a home visit.
During the home visit, a licensed installer will ensure your home has a feasible location for the installation, will review the electrical circuit availability with you, and create a quote for the work.
City Green will review the quote and determine if your home is suitable for the program. If the quote is accepted, we'll proceed with step 3.
All battery storage systems that connect to our grid require an accepted application to our self-generation program. City Green will handle most of this for you, including starting the application and adding the required specifications and documents. When prompted via email, you’ll simply need to log in to MyHydro and sign off on the application.
The licensed installer will request the required permits for the work.
Once the self-generation application is accepted and permits are approved, City Green will schedule an installation date with you.
The licensed installer will install the battery storage system at your home and show you how it works.
