Statement on BCUC’s decision on the Lower Mainland Reactive Power Reinforcement project
Operating our transmission system safely and reliably is a top priority. With our Burrard Synchronous Condenser Station in Port Moody reaching end-of-life, we have been working on a solution to address future load growth and ensure our transmission system continues to reliably serve the Lower Mainland, Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. We evaluated multiple alternatives and landed on a preferred alternative – the Lower Mainland Reactive Power Reinforcement Project, which would stop operations at the Burrard Synchronous Condenser Station and add equipment to four substations.
To move the project forward, we filed an application for a Certificate of Public Convenience – the approval to move ahead with a project because it is in the best interest of our customers – with the BC Utilities Commission in November 2022. While the Commission agreed a solution is needed, they have denied the current application citing the need for more information, including costs for decommissioning and remediation of the Burrard site, before making their final decision.
We are reviewing their decision in detail, and we will reapply with the additional information the Commission requires in the near future.
