Sperling Substation Upgrade Project
We're upgrading the Sperling Substation to ensure that we can continue to provide reliable power to the nearby community for years to come. The Sperling Substation was originally built in the 1940s and is a key piece of our electricity system in Vancouver. It currently serves over 56,000 homes and businesses in the area.
We're updating the Sperling Substation to increase system reliability, modernize the operations and improve safety for our workers.
Our upgrades include:
- Constructing a new building to house electrical equipment within our substation yard,
- Replacing equipment that has reached end-of-life, and
- Installing underground power lines to connect new equipment to our system.
Once the construction and electrical works are complete, we'll restore the site where required.
The Sperling Substation was built in the 1940s and upgraded in the 1970s. While we regularly inspect and maintain our equipment, it's time for some of the aging equipment to be replaced.
The new equipment will increase system reliability, modernize the operations and improve safety for our workers.
The Sperling Substation is an existing outdoor substation located on Arbutus Street near West King Avenue.
We started work at the Sperling Substation in 2021 and expect to complete this project in 2026. Once we've completed construction and electrical works, we'll restore the site where required.
Throughout our project, we're continuing our regular maintenance program at the substation.
