Mica Units 5 & 6 Projects
The Mica Generating Station, located 145 km north of Revelstoke, was originally designed to house six generating units though only four were installed when the facility was completed in 1977. Mica is the cornerstone of our Columbia River generation system, and accounts for 22% of our generation capacity.
In 2011, we started the Mica 5 and 6 Project to install two new 500 megawatt generating units to the two empty bays in the powerhouse.
The two generating units add approximately 1,000 megawatts of electricity to the grid – enough to power 80,000 homes.
In 2011, BC Hydro started the Mica 5 and 6 Project to install the two new 500 megawatt generating units into the remaining two empty bays in the powerhouse. The project was completed in March 2016.
The addition of Unit No. 5 and Unit No. 6 increases capacity to power another 80,000 homes to Vancouver and the B.C. south coast. Mica produces power for more than 650,000 homes each year.
