BC Hydro Power Pioneers
The Power Pioneers are more than just an organization of retired BC Hydro employees. They support communities and residents of British Columbia by working together to accomplish great things.
Who they are
Inaugurated in 1990 with three branches, the BC Hydro Power Pioneers Association carries on a tradition going back over 75 years to the days of B.C. Electric and B.C. Power Commission. They have 15 regional branches throughout B.C., representing over 5,500 retirees and their spouses.
Connecting people, supporting communities
Their motto is: Supporting our communities and each other. All Regional Branches become involved in fundraising and other activities to support both local and provincial charities. Power Pioneers partners with organizations that will benefit their members and their communities. Their partners include BC Hydro, BC Children's Hospital and other local hospitals, schools, charities and non-profit organizations.
The Power Pioneers support future generations through their involvement judging and presenting awards at BC School Science Fairs, Heritage Fairs and through their Community Service award.
They have worked to preserve the legacy of British Columbia by producing beautiful books like Gaslights to Gigawatts; Station Normal: The Power of the Stave River; Voices from Two Rivers: Harnessing the Power of the Peace and Columbia River; the Power Smart Story and People, Power and Progress, the John Hart Story. These books relate the life and times of B.C. and its people through historical context and oral histories.
Through their volunteer activities and fundraising initiatives the Power Pioneers are a link to BC Hydro's past and its future.
Their recognition
In 2010 the Power Pioneers received the prestigious Senior Leadership Award from Simon Fraser University's Gerontology Research Centre, in recognition of their contributions as volunteers.
Making a difference
Celebrating 25 years in 2015 – Power Pioneers marked a major milestone as they reached their $1 million goal through their Miracle Millions Campaign for BC Children's Hospital.
