Load displacement incentives

Contractor installing solar on business.

Funding to install generation equipment at your site

Are you interested in generating your own renewable electricity at your large commercial or industrial business? As part of our custom project incentives, you could get funding for equipment that generates electricity for your business' use.

Depending on your project, you may need to complete a study first or proceed directly with incentives.

Applicable generation types include:

  • Solar: Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels convert solar radiation into electricity to be used directly or can be paired with an energy storage system such as batteries.
  • Wind: Wind turbines convert kinetic energy into electricity.
  • Micro hydro: Hydroelectric power systems convert kinetic energy from flowing water to electricity.
  • Waste heat recovery: Convert heat waste from existing processes into electricity.

Other renewable sources defined in the Clean Energy Act such as biomass, biogas, geothermal and tidal energy are also applicable.

The offer

CUSTOMER TYPE

INCENTIVE RATE

MAXIMUM INCENTIVE

Distribution

2¢ to 5¢ per kilowatt-hour (kWh), depending on your project payback period

$1 million, a one-year payback amount, or 75% of project cost, whichever is least

Transmission

4.5¢ per kWh $5 million or 75% of project cost, whichever is less.

How it works

  1. Complete an interconnections study to determine the requirements for your load displacement project.
    • To initiate the study process, submit a micro-generator application (for large commercial and industrial – distribution customers with incoming connections under 35 kilovolts), or an interconnection request (for industrial – transmission customers, with incoming connections larger than 35 kilovolts).
    • For projects with 1 megawatt (MW) capacity or less, this process takes two to four months. For larger projects, it takes longer.
  2. Work with an energy expert registered with the Alliance of Energy Professionals to decide if you’re ready to move forward with your project.
    • Complex projects may choose to complete a feasibility study prior to understand the costs and energy benefits of implementing a solar or other load displacement option.
  3. Contact your Key Account Manager for the list of technical requirements and have your energy expert ensure your project meets them.
  4. Let your Key Account Manager know that you’re ready to apply.
  5. We'll perform an engineering and financial review of your project and calculate an incentive amount.
  6. We'll send you an agreement package for your signature which includes the incentive amount and the terms and conditions.
  7. Work with your contractor to purchase and install the equipment.
  8. Once your project is installed, send us copies of your paid invoices along with your completion documents (listed in your agreement package). We'll then review your documents and process the incentive payment.

Eligibility

In addition to the eligibility requirements for all custom project incentives, your load displacement projects must have a rated capacity of power generation of more than 100 kilowatts (kW). Projects smaller than this would fall under the net metering program.

CRITERIA

NET METERING PROGRAM

LOAD DISPLACEMENT INCENTIVES

Power generation capacity (AC power)

Up to 100 kW

Greater than 100 kW, no upper limit

Eligible customers

Residential and commercial (incl. large commercial) Industrial and large commercial

Power flow allowed

Bi-directional (i.e. generated power can flow into our electrical grid) Strictly unidirectional (i.e. generated power must be 100% used at your site)

Method of support

Project is implemented by the customer at their own expenses. We provide a bill credit for electricity sent to our grid, and an annual payout for unused credits.  We provide funding for a feasibility study and custom incentives for project implementation.

How to apply

Contact your Key Account Manager to inquire about this offer, and when you're ready to apply.

Tips for sizing your solar panel system

  • Make sure your solar PV system generates less than your operating load, as all electricity generated must be used on-site.
  • Do you have adequate rooftop space? For solar panels generating about 100 kW of energy, you'll need about 6,600 square feet of roof space.
