PRINCE GEORGE: BC Hydro has opened its first electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging hub in northern B.C., providing space for up to 16 EVs to charge at the same time in Prince George.
"This new electric vehicle fast-charging charge hub in Prince George, a first of its kind in northern B.C., continues our work with BC Hydro and other partners to make cleaner options more accessible and affordable for all British Columbians," said Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions.
The Prince George location was selected to support growing EV adoption in northern B.C. Located in the parking lot of the College of New Caledonia at Highway 97 and 22 Avenue, this hub features two of the new 350-kilowatt chargers – the highest powered chargers on BC Hydro's system. They can provide up to 100-kilometres of driving to an average electric vehicle in about five minutes. The chargers also offer power sharing so two vehicles can charge together on the same unit and receive up to 175-kilowatts each.
There are also six 180-kilowatt chargers capable of power sharing and providing two vehicles up to 90-kilowatts each. Some of the units are equipped with NACS (North American Charging Standard) connectors to support charging a variety of different EV models.
"British Columbians are embracing electric vehicles faster than any other jurisdiction in Canada and that's why we are continuing to make investments for growth within our current system and building out our fast-charging network across B.C.," said Chris O'Riley, President and CEO of BC Hydro. "These new chargers in Prince George will help support EV adoption and reduce range anxiety throughout northern B.C."
As BC Hydro continues to build out its fast-charging network, it plans to focus on building more hub sites with multiple chargers along highway corridors and urban communities to provide a faster and more convenient experience for its customers. Charge hubs have already been installed in Surrey, Delta and Colwood, and future charge hubs are planned in more communities across B.C.
The adoption of EVs across British Columbia has increased significantly with more than 180,000 EVs on the road in B.C. BC Hydro predicts there will be between 700,000 and 900,000 EVs within the next 10 years.
BC Hydro's provincewide fast-charging network currently includes 466 charging ports at 137 sites in communities throughout B.C. BC Hydro is looking to double the number of charging ports in its network to 800 by spring 2026. The chargers are funded in a partnership with the Province of B.C. and Natural Resources Canada.
