BC Hydro helps British Columbians save up to $300 on select ENERGY STAR appliances
VANCOUVER: When it comes to home appliances, the refrigerator is king. A new survey commissioned by BC Hydro found that almost 90 per cent of British Columbians say they are more dependent on their fridge than any other home appliance. If it’s time for an upgrade of a beloved refrigerator, washing machine or clothes dryer, British Columbians can save hundreds of dollars this fall on some of the most energy efficient models.
From Oct. 6 – Nov. 17, BC Hydro, select municipalities and participating retailers are offering combined rebates of up to $300 on select ENERGY STAR® washing machines.
In addition, BC Hydro and participating retailers and manufacturers are offering rebates on select ENERGY STAR clothes dryers and refrigerators of up to $300.
Appliances can account for up to 20 per cent of a household’s electricity use. Making smart energy choices can help customers save big on their energy bills. For example:
- Refrigerators consume more electricity than any other home appliance. Replacing a fridge that is 10 years old or older with an ENERGY STAR model could save $40 a year in electricity costs.
- An ENERGY STAR certified dryer uses 20 per cent less energy than a conventional clothes dryer, and can save up to $30 per year in electricity costs.
- Heating water accounts for 90 per cent of the energy consumption of washing machines. An ENERGY STAR front-loading machine can cut water use by nearly 40 per cent and electricity use up to 65 per cent compared to a conventional top loader.
