BC Hydro’s Integrated Resource Plan

Posted on December 15, 1:30 p.m.

BC Hydro is currently undertaking a long-term resource planning process to develop its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). BC Hydro’s IRP is a long-term (20‑year) plan for enhancing BC’s integrated power system to ensure future customer electricity needs are met with clean, reliable and affordable power. Transmission planning as part of IRP development is a Long-Term Planning process per Section 1 (a) of Attachment K to BC Hydro’s Open Access Transmission Tariff.

The IRP will be filed for approval with the British Columbia Utilities Commission.  The expected filing date is late 2021. The IRP looks at the province’s long-term electricity needs, compares alternatives and outlines actions that are aligned with government policies to meet future needs. A Base Resource Plan (BRP) is developed to meet the likely future demand, and one or more Contingency Resource Plans (CRPs) are developed to address risk and uncertainties. The IRP includes any required generation additions and major transmission reinforcements as well as demand-side management projects. Any major regional system expansion plans required will also be included.

We are engaging with Indigenous Nations, customers, other stakeholders and the broader public as we develop the IRP. This fall and winter we are gathering input on the plan to understand people’s priorities as we develop and compare options for the future power system. In the spring/summer of 2021, we’ll be gathering feedback on our draft actions.
