Meter Reading
In most areas of the province, meters are read by Meter Readers who enter readings into a hand-held computer, which stores information about your meter's location, any special reading instructions, safety information about your pets, and data on your consumption history. The portable computers can signal the meter reader when an incorrect number or higher than usual reading is entered. The information from the hand-held computers is later downloaded into the BC Hydro main computer and a bill is produced.
If your meter is not accessible due to locked gates, an indoor location of the meter or family pets, there are several ways to provide access for BC Hydro meter readers.
When We Read Your Meter
Most meters are read on approximately the same day every two months. Some commercial and residential meters are read every month. In remote areas, meters may be read every four to six months. Look at your current BC Hydro bill to determine your next meter reading date, or sign up for your account online to access your meter reading information on the web.
Identifying Your Meter Reader
Your meter reader wears a uniform that identifies him or her as a BC Hydro employee.
The BC Hydro logo appears on the front of a jacket or shirt.

Meter readers access your property on foot, or by car, boat, or bicycle, depending on your location. The meter reader may carry a small, black, hand-held processor or a clipboard. Some meter readers carry a black "dog stopper" umbrella. Meter readers will produce identification upon request.
