  • The Fort Nelson RFEOI closed on October 19, 2007. Thank you to everyone that submitted a RFEOI form.

BC Hydro is currently examining options in the Fort Nelson area to meet the anticipated need for new energy and capacity.

Fort Nelson is not connected to the BC Hydro grid, but is connected to the Alberta electric system via a transmission line. BC Hydro operates a gas-fired generating station in Fort Nelson and has a supply agreement with the Alberta Electric System Operator to provide backup and reliability in supply. However, as the region’s economy grows, BC Hydro is assessing options for other secure sources of energy.

Purpose

The results of the Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEOI) will help inform a broader resource plan for the area being prepared by BC Hydro's Energy Planning group.

On October 13, 2007, BC Hydro invited all parties that have potential clean projects in the Fort Nelson area to submit a response to this RFEOI in order to assess potential projects that could be advanced by the private sector.

To achieve a clean distinction, a power facility would have to meet the province's forthcoming guidelines for clean resources. Examples of clean power may include hydro, wind, solar, geothermal and biomass energy.

Please note that this RFEOI was not a pre-qualification process. Not responding to the RFEOI will not prohibit proponents from participating in future power acquisition processes.

Response deadline

The RFEOI closed on October 19, 2007. We would like to thank everyone that submitted a RFEOI form. If you have submitted an expression of interest you will be on the Office of Power Acquisitions’ mailing list to receive any updates on the development of the resource plan for the area and be notified of any future acquisitions processes.

Fort Nelson resource plan

BC Hydro is in the process of developing a resource plan that will allow it to meet its electricity service obligations in the Fort Nelson area over the long term. In order to provide some background to its planning process to the local community, BC Hydro Energy Planning hosted an open house in Fort Nelson on April 30, 2008.

The following fact sheet and presentation given at the open house provide some background to the Fort Nelson resource planning process.
